Main Feature:
The Future of
Wordfast
|

|
|

|
|
|
A Robust and Scalable Solution for Freelancers, Agencies, and
Corporations
The hot topic on the street (and in the online Wordfast forums) is when
the new version of Wordfast will be made available and what it will
offer users. We’d like to shed some light on the topic and inform
you of what’s in store for the next version of Wordfast. Our
development team is currently working on Wordfast 6.0, which will be in
beta testing this summer and is scheduled be released later this year.
This standalone, cross-platform application will provide translators, LSPs, and corporations with a fresh, new
alternative to SDL Trados. Wordfast 6.0 is a
flexible tool that can work with local TM files or connect remotely to
a powerful TM server application. Some of the key advantages are:
-
Platform Independence -
Since Wordfast 6.0 is Java-based, it will run on Windows,
Mac OS X, or Linux.
-
Improved File
Format Support - Filters currently exist for .doc, .ppt,
.xls, .html, .xml,
and .jsp files.
-
Intuitive
Interface - Users will have the ability to work in a standalone
environment with customizable views based upon individual preference.
-
Automated
Quality Assurance - Multilingual spell checks and terminology
recognition will improve speed and accuracy during the review process.
Wordfast 6 also features placeable QA.
-
Enhanced TM
Compatibility - As always, Wordfast 6.0 will be compatible with any
TMX-compliant tool, allowing for seamless integration of TM assets from
Trados, SDLX,
or Deja Vu files.
-
Peer Technology Support - LSPs and corporations will benefit from Wordfast’s substantial user base around the
world, giving them access to a large pool of technology-savvy
providers.
For agencies and corporations, Wordfast 6.0 will offer
a powerful PM Plug-in that will enable Project Managers and engineers
to utilize high-speed batch processing functionality, as well as analyze
and pre-translate content prior to distribution.
Wordfast’s server-based
TM will also be available and enable multiple TMs to be shared by
different translators simultaneously. Project Managers will have the
ability to assign specific rights and privileges to individual
translators or linguistic teams.
If you are an LSP or corporation interested in learning
more about Wordfast 6.0 or scheduling a demo, please contact
us. We also have a Beta Test Program for early adopters.
What does this mean for Wordfast as we know it? The
“Classic” version of Wordfast (an MS Word Add-On) will not
be dropped: both will coexist and continue to be developed as long as
translators continue working in MS Word. This gives translators the
choice of working in the MS Word environment or the new standalone
environment. At Wordfast, we value your ability to choose!
With its arsenal of new features and stable performance
at an affordable price, Wordfast 6.0 promises to be a real contender
for the number 1 Translation Memory solution in the world. For more
information regarding Wordfast 6 as it becomes available, please contact
us.

Tips and Tricks:
A few lesser-known
features to enhance productivity and quality
|

|
|

|
|
|
Save time with Placeables using the Tabulator shortcut
There is a brand new time-saver within Wordfast! In version 5.52z
and higher, the Tab key can now be used to transfer placeables
from source to target segment almost instantly. When in the target
segment, type the first letter of a placeable
in the source segment (case-sensitive), then
hit the Tab key. Wordfast will insert the placeable
into your translation.
Benefits:
-
The tab key is
large, easy to hit, and conveniently located.
-
On most
segments, the capital letter of a source placeable
(usually, a person's name, or brand name) is all it takes to grab it on
the first try.
-
This method not
only increases productivity, it also enhances quality – you
don’t have to retype, therefore common typos are avoided.
A
faster, safer way to clear target segments
Often when translating, initial translations must be erased and
redone. Now, in Wordfast version 5.52z and higher, you can
automatically delete the text in the target segment by pressing
Ctrl-Alt-X. This is much faster and safer than selecting the text
in the target segment and deleting it. It’s a guaranteed
time-saver and it may prevent damage to a precious delimiter.
Importing your
personal glossary into Wordfast
The glossary feature is an item often underused by the Wordfast
community. Users can take a Word or Excel glossary of their own and
import it into Wordfast to ensure terminology consistency throughout
their translations.
How do I convert a glossary
from Word or Excel?
To convert the Word table or Excel glossary to plain text with tab
delimiters, follow the following instructions:
MS Word 2003
1. Select the rows or table that you want to convert to text
2. Choose Convert from the Table menu, then chose Table to Text
from the resulting submenu.
Word then displays the Convert Table to Text
dialog box
3. Select the tab delimiter (tabs)
4. Data is then separated by tabs and can be saved as with a .txt
extension
MS Word 2007
1. Select the rows or table that you want to convert to text
2. Under Table, on the Layout tab, in the data group, click Convert to
Text
3. Under Separate Text With, click the option for Tabs
4. Data is then separated by tabs and can be saved as with a .txt
extension
MS Excel
1. Click File and select Save As...
2. Under Save As type: select the Text (tab delimited) .txt option
Congratulations! They are now ready to be used as a glossary in
Wordfast, ensuring
terminology consistency!
Bonus... Converting your MultiTerm Glossary
How do I convert a MultiTerm Glossary to a Wordfast Glossary?
SDL MultiTerm
1. Place the MultiTerm glossary into an Excel
format, ensuring that there are
no empty lines or spaces in the Excel file
2. Name the file and specify that it is a glossary, not a translation
memory (TM)
3. Under Separate Text Tab, click the option for Tabs
4. This file can then be converted to a Wordfast glossary as a
tab-delimited file by
using the steps above

Wordfast Online Training Programs to begin in July
|

|
|

|
|
|
Beginning in July, Wordfast will launch a series of
online training seminars for beginner, intermediate and advanced
Wordfast users. Historically, Wordfast users would seek out
trainers located in their geographic region and arrange for onsite training.
Now, through the convenience of web-based meeting software, Wordfast
trainers can come to you, in the comfort of your home or office.
Wordfast will offer
two types of training sessions. The first will be individual
(one-on-one training) wherein the Wordfast user will select the desired
amount of time and design his or her own agenda with the trainers
input. The user will be able to have his or her specific
questions addressed. The second type of training will be small
group training (2-5 attendees), wherein attendees will receive
personalized attention. These sessions will be designated
as beginner, intermediate or advanced and will group users with
similar experience levels together in order to create the most
efficient training for all involved.
Contact
us to receive more information regarding online training.

Wordfast Supports the Arts
|

|
|

|
|
|
Wordfast is proud to sponsor “Les Craies d’Azur”, an
innovative festival aimed at bringing artists and the local population
together in order to raise money for the arts.
The sidewalk chalk festival was held for two days, June 14th and 15th,
in Nice, France. Proceeds will
be donated to schools in the local area with the goal of financing art
programs throughout the school year so that children can benefit from
the exposure to the arts.
